Nokia & Intel Unite To Create MeeGo (a Linux Based OS)
Continuing in the battle of providing superior User Experience with an open platform strategy, Nokia & Intel have announced partnership to merge Nokia’s Maemo OS and Intel’s Moblin OS developing a Linux based MeeGo OS. This is going to be the second major strategic move by Nokia after announcing Symbian as an open source platform. It will definitely create some disrupting waves in the competitors’ camps (Google with open source Android, Apple with Mac OSX and Microsoft’s to be launched Windows Mobile 7).
Both the incumbents are well positioned to exploit this partnership and power not only mobile devices but tablets, netbooks, laptops and many more digital electronics (TV) as well. Maemo is the platform that runs the Nokia N900, while Moblin runs on phones such as the LG GW990 and netbooks from Foxconn, Acer, and others.
Advantages of MeeGo:
Faster time to market from incumbent,OEM & ODM’s point of view
Running the open-source MeeGo, the OS can provide more of a PC-like experience on a small device, according to Nokia.
MeeGo for smartphones will help system developers create next- generation communication devices with high-quality multimedia features, while reducing the amount of development iterations. MeeGo’s graphics system pre-integration and open software stack makes advanced visual features, such as HD video-conferencing, advanced telephony, touch UI, and integrated business applications, much easier to accomplish.
MeeGo’s ability to mix native and web UI development allows widgets to share documents and presentations and to access web content with less memory consumption.
MeeGo will provide the development community with tools, such as the Qt Creator IDE, documentation, sample code, and applications.
Accommodates independent third party technology and software, applications development
Ease of use from developer’s perspective
With this Nokia now has a stronger OS portfolio too, with its feet firmly planted in Symbian and Linux camps powering its devices competing against the promising and powerful market entrants of the likes of Google, Apple(not an entrant anymore though..).
Let’s check out what the Maemo and Moblin technical team has to say…
